Findings on the Chemical Rotation of Light

Abstract

Specific rotation of plane polarized light in select chiral compounds leads to the conclusion that mass, charge, and electronegativity of substituents determine the extent and direction of rotation. The usual description that light rotation is due to differential refraction as in birerefringence is challenged.
